The President elect (founder President) of the IUD Dr. Janaka Wijesundara addressed the gathering and explained in the need for the emerging profession of Urban designers in Sri Lanka in the process for a national development at policy level. As a first process of establishing the profession of urban design he stated that forming an education system to produce urban designers with competent knowledge for the local context was of prime concern. Where by a holistic input in to the subject matter was needed, to produce competent professionals in the field. Hence a prost graduate level degree program for eligible persons to qualify as urban designer was established at the University of Moratuwa. This was since the year 2008 and the course lead to a Diploma in Urban Design after completing one year of the course works, followed by another year leading to the Masters in Urban Design. The need for urban designers for the countries national development was emphasized.

The chairman UDA addressed the gathering and mentioned about the importance and the role the Urban Designer has to play in the Statutory bodied. And the absence of the URBAN Designer has been felt for many years in all national level projects within the statutory bodies. Furthermore he emphasized that in future he will be in discussion with the policy makes and includes the urban designer into the stake holder agencies and obtains their services.
