THE BOARD OF URBAN DESIGN EDUCATION


URBAN DESIGN EDUCATION:

As the governing national body for the profession of Urban Design, Sri Lanka Institute of Urban Designers, will play a pivotal role in accreditation and recognition of education in Urban Design.

THE BOARD OF URBAN DESIGN EDUCATION (BUDE), will govern the matters concerning, standards of education and evaluation of qualifications.

As some of the key objectives of the BUDE– SLIUD will be to:

  • Recognition of the profession at National level and amongst the stake holders.
  • Bringing Urban Design in to the policy level which will play a major role in national development.
  • Be the National body of Urban Designers in Sri Lanka, where the professions integrity will be safe-guarded, and will be the controlling body for the development and growth of the profession, and address all legal implications of the same; at national level and policy level.

Urban Design education in the respective region and country needs to address the local conditions, bio climatic factors, subcultural implications, geo physical features, the national infrastructure development plans etc. Hence anyone who needs to practice the profession needs to be climatized to the local conditions and legislative factors.

  • Urban designing largely involves, the designing of urban spaces in between the buildings and meticulously planning and designing the urban fabric in harmony with the environment, enabling functionalism and efficiency of the city. Also the harmonious placing of elements, which gives a subtle meaning to the city which eventually will resemble the sense of time and character.

Hence the quality and standard of education in the respective discipline plays a vital role in producing competent professionals.

Therefore monitoring the subject matter, covered in the curricula, and maintaining standards for recognition and accreditation criteria will be a key role in the Board of Education of the SLIUD.

Tertiary education in any discipline need to adhere to the standards expected, at international level and also need to fit in to the local context where the local conditions and the governing; laws and by laws needs to be taken in to account.

  • The Board of Urban Design Education which is the education arm of the SLIUD will be a legal entity of under the regulations governing the Institution.
  • The Board of Education will function with sub committees under its main arm:
  1. Educational Standards Committee :

Evaluation of qualifications and their eligibility in gaining recognition within the Institution will be a key factor of the Committee. For Accreditation of educational institutions that offer courses in Urban Design both locally and internationally the board will set up standards and criteria for each level of qualifications in Urban design Education in Sri Lanka.

– This is mainly to recognize qualified Urban Designers who want to become members of the Institution and who wants to practice the profession in Sri Lanka.

The levels of educations will be:

  1. Part 01 – at Under-graduate level
  2. Part 02 – at Post graduate Level
  3. Part 03 – at Professional practice examination level leading to Charter.

Generally the BUDE advises on all aspects of curriculum relating to the teaching of Urban Design, draws up curricula, syllabi and teaching methods, review curricula, syllabi and teaching methods every three years, evaluate curricula, syllabi and teaching methods of foreign schools for purposes of enrolling their students as members, etc. and set standards and procedures for training the Urban Design Students.

The Committee of Educational Standards will have a list of schools that offers courses at Undergraduate and Post graduate level, and scrutinize their curricula. And maintain a register of accredited schools and institutions within the SLIUD.

Accreditation is a key component in the BUDE, as it will help to recognize any overseas qualification of any person seeking membership of the SLIUD. With their respective curricula and course, material covered at each level.

This is a general practice followed in professional bodies in many other countries. Where any overseas candidate’s qualifications are evaluated in comparison with the criteria set out in its own country’s professional body.

One of the main bodies in Sri Lanka that governs tertiary educational recognition is the UGC – University Grants Commission mainly for academic qualifications. And the respective professional institutions for the professional accreditation to become a member of their respective institution.

The BUDE of the SLIUD will follow the similar procedure, while maintaining a cordial relationship with the UGC and its criteria.

  1. Examinations Committee

Examinations Committee generally involves by advising the BUDE on all aspects of examinations including examination procedures and monitoring the examinations conducted by future listed academic programs, arrange Practical Training Counselors for those registered or intending to sit for any examination and prepare an analysis of examination results on an annual basis.

  1. Membership Enrolment Committee

Membership Enrolment Committee generally advises the BUDE on eligibility criteria for enrolment as Members, process applications for various membership categories and recommend to BAE of acceptability of such applications, review membership enrolment procedures periodically and forward recommendations to BUDE.

All candidates who seek membership of the SLIUD needs to submit their portfolios and professional affiliations with any other country which will be reviewed and scrutinized by the membership enrolment committee which will grant recognition to their credential to become eligible for memberships.

Ad-hoc Committees BUDE may also appoints Ad-Hoc committees from time to time advice it on current issues.
